GPS coordinates

GPS coordinates are your latitude and longitude. Tap Find my location to see yours in decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds, and UTM, with your device's accuracy estimate. Or paste coordinates in any of these formats to convert them.

Private by design. This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you enter stays on your device. It is not uploaded to us or stored. Your location is read by your browser only when you tap Find my location and is shown only to you. If you choose to open it in Google Maps or Apple Maps, it is sent to that service.

The same point in Central Park, New York, written four ways:

Six decimal places in decimal degrees is about 0.1 meter, more than enough for any phone. All coordinates here use WGS 84, the system GPS and web maps use. For State Plane, NAD83, or other systems, use the coordinate system converter.

How accurate is your location?

Your phone or computer reports an accuracy radius with each position: the true location is likely within that distance. Phones with open sky are typically within a few meters. That is fine for finding a spot again, but not for a fence line or a property corner.

For centimeter-level positions,* you need an RTK receiver and a correction service. See Phone GPS vs RTK for when it matters.

* Centimeter-level positioning requires a compatible RTK receiver, a correction service, an internet connection, and open sky. Results depend on the equipment and conditions. Phone GPS is typically accurate to a few meters; map tracing depends on the imagery and where you place points.

County boundaries: U.S. Census Bureau, 2024 Cartographic Boundary Files (1:500,000), simplified; near a county line, check an official map.

Questions

How do I find my GPS coordinates?

Tap "Find my location" on this page and allow location access. On an iPhone, the Compass app also shows your coordinates. In Google Maps, touch and hold a spot on the map to drop a pin and see its coordinates.

What county am I in?

Tap "Find my location". In the United States, the results include the county (or parish, borough, or independent city) you are in, found in your browser from US Census Bureau boundaries. Near a county line, check an official county map.

How do I enter GPS coordinates in Google Maps?

Type them in the search box with latitude first, for example 40.782164, -73.965342. Degrees, minutes, and seconds also work, for example 40°46'55.8"N 73°57'55.2"W.

How accurate is my phone's location?

Outdoors with open sky, phone GPS is typically accurate to a few meters. It is worse near tall buildings, under trees, and indoors. Computers without GPS estimate location from Wi-Fi and can be off by tens of meters or more. The accuracy shown on this page is your device's own estimate.

What is the difference between decimal degrees and degrees, minutes, seconds?

They are two ways to write the same angle. A degree has 60 minutes and a minute has 60 seconds, so 40°46'30" is 40 + 46/60 + 30/3600 = 40.775°. South latitudes and west longitudes are negative in decimal degrees.

What are UTM coordinates?

Universal Transverse Mercator divides the world into 60 zones, each 6° of longitude wide. A position is given as a zone and latitude band, such as 18T, plus meters east (easting) and north (northing). UTM is used on topographic maps, by search and rescue, and in GIS.
